Speak Out Central New York Responds To Republicans’ Ongoing Effort To Fund Tax Breaks For Rich Donors By Destroying Healthcare For Millions Of Americans

SYRACUSE – On the same day a new study found that uninsured rates are climbing because of the TrumpTax passed in December, President Trump’s own former Health & Human Services Secretary Tom Price admitted that the Republicans’ repeal of the individual mandate will drive up costs on Americans who continue to rely on marketplace insurance plans.

According to the Washington Times, Price said:

“And there are many, and I’m one of them, who believes that [repealing the individual mandate] actually will harm the pool in the exchange market, because you’ll likely have individuals who are younger and healthier not participating in that market, and consequently, that drives up the cost for other folks within that market.”

The Commonwealth Fund reported today that the rate of uninsured Americans is once again on the rise, up 3 percent since 2016 to about 15.5 percent of adults nationwide – 4 million more Americans than were unisured in 2016.

Speak Out Central New York issued the following statement in response to today’s news:

“Republicans like Claudia Tenney and Kohn Katko knowingly lied to us about the damage their votes for the TrumpTax would cause. The health of the Americans and Central New Yorkers they represent will suffer because of their decision to serve their wealthy campaign donors instead of their own constituents. Even Donald Trump’s own hand-picked HHS Secretary agrees.

“Tom Price says dismantling the individual mandate – which both Katko and Tenney happily voted to do in December – will raise insurance rates for everyone, and lead directly to more uninsured New Yorkers. Almost exactly one year to the day after the disastrous and vindictively partisan failed vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act, Republicans are still getting what they wanted – tax breaks for their rich friends, no matter the cost to their own constituents.”
